Intersections sprouting
Over at a blog called From the Mixed-Up Files. . . of Middle-Grade Authors, Sayantani DasGupta is posting about Fat Studies and MG fiction: From Augustus Gloop to Dudley Dursley: Fat Studies and Middle Grade Novels. I'm honored to be mentioned in her post, and more than that, I'm utterly thrilled for Fat Studies and children's lit to be forming an intersection. A tiny, tiny, young intersection. May we cultivate it.

You don't have to publish or do anything public to help cultivate it. Little words here and there, written or spoken; little expressions of skepticism when you hear fatphobia; a mild raised eyebrow when someone makes a fatphobic assumption. Or, try a casual mention of fatness as a non-terrible thing.

DasGupta is also a contributor to Adios Barbie (see, for example, BMI in Schools: Educating Children in Self-Loathing, Not Health and Talking about Periods: Removing Menstrual Shame for Social Justice), and for those of you in New York, DasGupta is presenting at the upcoming #140 characters conference on June 18. Her piece is called "From losing the weight to losing the hate: A pediatrician's take on toxic body culture." I can't express how much I wish I could go. DasGupta is forging a critical, desperately important intersection between Fat Studies, children's lit, and medicine. Think of that.

I know you've been writing about this intersection for some time, so it's great to see that other people are joining you!

Thank you! There's been support from both camps -- the fatpol / Fat Studies camp, and the children lit camp -- but it feels incredible to have company in the actual intersection.
